Marin T. KaelThe Fourth Field
Frequently Asked Questions
What is "The Fourth Field" about?
"The Fourth Field" is set in Varin, a city where written edicts — sealed by Crown, Guild, and Coffer — physically alter reality. When a forbidden Free Edict destroys a harbor district, the scribe-apprentice Arin finds himself caught between intrigue and rebellion. Between the seals lies the Fourth Field — the unwritten, the potential — and Arin's power comes from precisely that field.
When does "The Fourth Field" come out in English?
The English edition release date is to be announced. The German edition, Das vierte Feld, releases on September 22, 2026 as hardcover, paperback, and ebook through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. Pre-order for the German edition opens late June 2026. To be notified when the English edition is scheduled, subscribe to the Letter "Letters from the Archives".
What formats are available?
The German edition releases in three formats: hardcover (ISBN 979-8-272-66562-1), paperback, and ebook (Kindle). The ebook is available through Kindle Unlimited. The English edition formats will be announced together with the English release date.
Who is "The Fourth Field" for — what does it resemble?
The book is for readers of epic fantasy with depth and intellectual worldbuilding. It compares to Robert Jackson Bennett's Foundryside trilogy (magic as bureaucratic system, scripture alters reality), Robin Hobb's Farseer saga (character depth, slow-burn arc across many volumes), and R. F. Kuang's Babel (language-centered magic, academic intensity). Readers of Steven Erikson, China Miéville, and Markus Heitz will also find their footing in Varin.
How does the magic system in "The Fourth Field" work?
In Varin, magic acts through scripture: whoever seals an edict text with wax, color, and one or more of the three seals — Crown, Guild, or Coffer — alters reality. Crown, Guild, and Coffer may each imprint singly or in combination — none is a prerequisite for another. Free Edicts are edicts written without seal consent. They are categorically forbidden, yet in practice self-regulating: the price a Free Edict extracts from its writer is always disproportionate to the effect achieved. Between the seals lies the Fourth Field: the unwritten, the potential — the true cosmic structure to which the Volume I title refers.
Is "The Fourth Field" the opening of a series?
Yes — "The Fourth Field" is Volume I of the saga "Imprintings of the Realm", a multi-volume work.
Is there a sample chapter of "The Fourth Field"?
Yes. An early excerpt goes out, before release, to subscribers of the Letter "Letters from the Archives" — double opt-in, unsubscribe any time.
What is epic fantasy with scripture magic?
Epic fantasy with scripture magic is a sub-genre in which magical effect arises from writing or sealing texts — not through classical elements, gods, or spoken spells. The magic system in "The Fourth Field" belongs to this tradition: edicts as physical laws whose force is bound through wax, color, and seal. Related works: Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett, Babel by R. F. Kuang.
Who is Marin T. Kael?
Marin T. Kael is the pseudonym of a German-language author working on the saga "Imprintings of the Realm". He runs in parallel an open field laboratory on AI visibility for an author. No author photo. Press inquiries to press@marin-t-kael.de.
What is the Marin T. Kael research program?
An open field laboratory on how language models, AI search engines, and knowledge graphs today read, understand, and cite an author. The program operates in three temporally overlapping phases. Phase 1 (May → Sep 2026) interleaves six active pre-registrations Q0–Q5 with parallel instrument validation — eight measurement surfaces are sampled daily and tested for test-retest reliability, drift, and coverage; an annotation schema (codebook v0.x → v1.0) is publicly versioned. Phase 2 (Sep 2026 → Q3 2027) measures post-launch effects after the book launch on 22 September. Phase 3 (from Q3 / 2027) runs long-term controlled experiments on the validated apparatus. Addressed to authors who want to understand their visibility in AI search, and to practitioners of search and answer engine optimization (SEO / AEO / GEO). Five lines of inquiry: Citation Inventory · Measurement-Instrument Validation · Codebook Iteration · Voice Consistency · Open Materials. More at /en/research.
